How lice are able to live without a person’s head

Lice are obligate and very specific human parasites. They are not fully adapted to life outside their bodies or other animals. Only in exceptional cases, lice can live and multiply in the hairs on the body of some monkeys, but here they feel much worse than a human hair.

The question of how much lice a person can live without is a simple answer – as much as they can cope without food. And the issue of hunger is very serious for lice – in general, living cannot starve for more than 2 days, and only when the temperature drops to 10–12 ° C does it go to 10 without food. It can span for days.

How lice live, they feed continuously. Head lice are eaten 4 times a day, pubic – every 3-4 hours.

From the above considerations, it is easy to understand that lice cannot live outside the head and in general for a long time – outside of a living being.

Specific nutritional lice and their dependence on the owner

The only food for all types of lice found in humans is blood that sucks parasites, piercing the skin between their hair. It is wrong to assume that the lice feed on the hair itself: some think that the head lice are often found to hold the hair tightly.

The insect does not perform such tricks only in order to fall off the head during human movement, combing or washing hair. For nutrition, the parasite still has to go down on the skin, piercing it with its styling and sucking blood.

Each species and even each subspecies of the head lice is well adapted to its environment. The shape and size of the segments on the paws to hold the hair, the body shape, even the normal forms of the stomach of the insect, designed to live on a person and even on a specific part of their body has been done.

For example, some lice stay outside the head – swarms of clothing remain on the clothes and crawl into a person’s body while wearing clothes. A pubic herd resides exclusively on pubic hair and armpits. Only in children can a pubic louse infect the hair on the head.

Head lice not only stay on the head but can crawl on men’s beards and even eyelashes. Although in general, the size of adult lice does not allow them to parasitize comfortably on very short hairs.

Generally, even a person’s life do not last long. If the insect does not fall from the head and is not poisoned with special shampoo or kerosene, the louse in the adult stage lasts a maximum of 40–46 days, with the breed developing an additional 15–20 days. Generally, the louse lasts about two months on the head, and on the pubis – about six weeks.

But visit animals cannot make human head lice. In laboratory experiments, they feed on the bodies of monkeys, but in nature, they are practically not on primates. Therefore, these parasites cannot exist outside humans. The only exceptions are body lice that do not live on the human body, but all eat the same…

And the lounge is not suited to life without a man!

Body composition and lice lifestyle indicate that during their development, they managed to fully adapt to humans. Their claws have been modified so that they can do almost nothing except the implementation of hooks by the hair. The mouth tool lice is adapted only for bleeding.

Do lice live on pillows and blankets?

Of course, don’t live with pillows and bed lice if only because they have nothing to cling to and nowhere to drop the nuts.

In some cases, the head lice may fall on the pillow from the infected person’s hair and stay here for several hours, providing a chance for the human head to crawl back. The thighs of the body may also settle in folds of blankets and sheets, but these insects do not form a permanent population here.

But juice can easily spread through towels, combs, and scrunchies. To prevent infection, first of all you should check with hygiene products and the person with whom you communicate.
